Empathy, Outrage and Commitment in and beyond the Arts

  • Künstlerhaus Wien, 2024/25

Substanz highlights the foundations from which we emerge: our humanity our social integration, and our will to create, thus bringing our own selves and our personal position into the world. Using an exemplary approach, the exhibition presents national and international artists and cultural advocates whose artproduction and/ or private initiatives are social acts. Through their art and their commitment, the artists strive to provide knowledge and stimulate emotional processes – they want to alert, provide comfort, and give hope. Some artists form communities, launch campaigns, or initiate funding projects. Others use specific artistic expressions to raise public awareness of urgent issues, enter into dialogue, or take a position themselves.

Artists: Ines Agostinelli, bi0film (Jung Hsu & Natalia Rivera), Vlasta Delimar, Veronika Dirnhofer, Georg Hobmeier, Florine Imo, Julian Jankovic, Nesterval, Jovana Reisinger, Jaqueline Scheiber, Christoph Schwarz, Selma Selman, tools4art, Darrel Toulon, Brittany Tucker, Johannes Wiener, Nazim Ünal Yilmaz, Laurent Ziegler.

  • PARSA KHALILI

    Constructions

    Bildraum 07, Vienna 2024

Artist and architect Parsa Khalili experiments with the perception of surface effects, formal transformations and spatial ambiguities at multiple scales - from drawings and large-format paintings to buildings. Khalili’s current body of work Constructions arises from a rigorous process of layering linework and planes of color that create the illusion of space. Obscured alignments and subtle shifts in composition are juxtaposed with abrupt transitions to unsettle the eye.

The exhibition Constructions plays with contingent imbalances that force one to search for stability and coherency - without resolution. It is a restless, probing work—in its production but also in its reception. Parsa Khalili’s experiments intend to blur the differences between drawings and paintings as representations of space and as formal and spatial products unto themselves, yielding a body of work that is both systematic and unexpected.

  • SIMON GORITSCHNIG

    Excavations from Unknown Origins

    Bildraum 07, Vienna 2024

Driven by his interest in biology, archaeology and science fiction, Simon Goritschnig delves into the possibilities of alien worlds. With recourse to isomorphism - the mathematical principle of congruence, of similarity in the most unexpected regions of the cosmos - Excavations from Unknown Origins links evolutionary theory with speculations about unknown life forms.

Goritschnig’s objects, created using 3d-printing, resemble fossils, whereby inorganic materiality meets organic forms. In addition, the artist places graphite frottages and ink drawings alongside computer-aided methods and their post-apocalyptic flair. Simon Goritschnig discusses the effects of human activity on ecosystems of all kinds and spins a web of thoughts on space colonisation. The artist is driven by the essential question of the value of life that eludes our imagination.

  • SOPHIE HIRSCH

    Anxiety is Neutral

    Bildraum 07, Vienna 2023

Within the expanded concept of sculpture, Sophie Hirsch is interested in the close connection between emotional and physical processes. Based on her fascination with the physical teachings of Joseph Pilates, the artist has been exploring movement sequences and the social codes inscribed in them for some time. In Anxiety is Neutral, Hirsch now questions the widespread perception of anxiety as an undesirable and “bad” feeling.

The exhibition invites visitors to take a seat on armchair objects made from acupressure mats or to treat themselves with a self-massage by an object made of metal springs. In Sophie Hirschs silicone objects the organic — fascia, muscle strands and fat deposits — contrast the rigidity of steel constructions and frames. The artist's curiosity about the physical strength and range of movement of the human body, body memory and emotional processes reveals the robust in the fragile and vice versa.

“It is precisely this longing that leads me to my current challenge. Instead of obsessively wanting to correct the unpleasant, I try to find ways to integrate these aspects.” - Sophie Hirsch

  • JEREMIAS ALTMANN

    Once Upon

    Bildraum Studio, Brotfabrik, Vienna 2022

Jeremias Altmann has investigated real depiction as well as imaginative representations: from spacial interventions to graphic editions, from image to object, from 3D print to film — Altmann includes a wide range of techniques in his ever expanding experiment. Focus of the exhibition Once Upon is the series YOUNG PROPHECIES (since 2009), which emerged from the artist’s preoccupation with his childhood drawings.

The artist zooms into the original drawings, pulling individual figures out of their mysterious original context. Enriched by archetypical symbols, hybrids, automats, monsters, and all kinds of insects populate Altmanns burning inferno, wasteland, and seabed. At Bildraum Studio the artist translates the images of his childhood into painting, graphics and an expansive wall intervention that allow us to trace the strangely animated, childlike worlds of perception and experience.

  • FLAVIA MAZZANTI
  • MICHAELA PUTZ
  • SIMON LEHNER

  •            Atelierhaus Salzamt Linz 2021
curated together with Michaela Wimplinger and Holger Jagersberger

In the scope of the Ars Electronica Festival 2022, Salzamt Linz stages a group exhibition of three emerging artists, spanning across the fields of new media, applied science and photography. In an attempt to (re)construct experiences of violence and abuse in the consciousness as well as subconsciousness, Simon Lehner's work alternates between remembered and perceived reality. The artist works with different media, which mainly revolve around iterations of the photographic process.

The artist and former architect Flavia Mazzanti uses immersive media to examine socio-spatial contexts. As a member of “Neuro-Traces” (alongside Manuel Bonell, Michael Bonell and Imani Rameses) Mazzanti further combines brain computer interfaces (EEG) and virtual reality to create an installation that can be experienced interactively.  Michaela Putz deals with the implications of a society reduced to the surfaces of digital communication technologies. Using photography, painting and digital post-processing, she presents an expansive installation  and examines the influence of increasing digitalisation on the perception of intimate relationships.
